Tilemaster Adhesives’ preparation and fixing products were recently specified as part of a Tiled Space ceramic mural installation at ZSL London Zoo’s new lion enclosure – Land of the Lions.
The stunning installation includes 1024 individually printed tiles – created using patented Tiled Space technology – which form a vibrant Indian-themed visual on a curved brick wall. The ceramic surface spans over 23.5 sq metres and was fixed using Tilemaster’s Prime + Grip, Ultimate Grey and Grout 3000.
Officially opened by The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, Land of the Lions will form a new breeding centre for a group of endangered Asiatic lions, with the Zoological Society of London also working with zoos and forest rangers in the lions’ homeland of the Gir Forest, India, to help safeguard the species’ future in the wild.
Five times bigger than the previous enclosure, the new immersive exhibit covers 2,500 metres and is designed to transport visitors from the heart of London to the vibrant Gir region of Gujurat, India, with recreations of the high street of Sasan Gir village, a train station, an abandoned fort and a crumbling temple.
During the installation, Tilemaster’s rapid-drying primer – ready-mixed Prime + Grip – was applied to provide a textured “+ Grip” surface. Tilemaster’s highly flexible cement-based adhesive – Ultimate – was then used to bond the Tiled Space ceramics. Fast-setting Ultimate is ideal for fixing to difficult substrates and for wet conditions/weather exposure.
A mid grey toned grout, from Tilemaster’s Grout 3000 range, was then used to complete the installation, providing smooth, controlled workability and a durable, moisture and frost resistant joint.
