J H LIDSTONE COMPLETES THE PARK TILING PROJECT WITH MAPEI ECO-SYSTEM

Published 19th June 2025 / General

J H Lidstone has completed a major tile installation using a sustainable Mapei system at The Park – Plymouth City Council’s new state-of-the-art crematorium facility in Saltram, Plymouth. Spanning a floor area of over 1500m2 – and including walls and floors – the installation encompassed three ceremony spaces, WC’s and the Drake Memorial Park café/function room and kitchen. The project was completed for Kier Construction and featured Mapei preparation and fixing products from the Zero Line – with CO2 offset in the entire lifecycle* – and very low VOC EMICODE® EC1PLUS formulations for a safe application.

Designed by Stride Treglown Architects, The Park has a minimalistic, landscape-inspired design created to promote a sense of calmness. The low-rise building sits beside a large, organically-planted pond within a woodland edge. Inside, timber features add warmth and draw the eye. Domus designs in a palette of natural shades were chosen to complement the centre’s aesthetic and its exterior, which is clad with Plymouth Limestone. The tile installation included flooring within three ceremony spaces, along with fluted dado wall tiles up to a height of 5m. Floor and wall tiles were also installed within three toilet facilities, as well as the café and catering areas.

Mapei Topcem – a special fast drying hydraulic screed binder – was added to form the screed where early overlay of finishes was required and Mapefibre NS12 mono-filament, virgin polypropylene fibres were used within the screed to enhance resistance to cracking.

To prepare and smooth surfaces before tiling, J H Lidstone used Mapei Ultraplan Renovation Screed 3240 – a fibre-reinforced smoothing compound – throughout the project. Mapeguard UM 35 uncoupling and anti-fracture membrane was also installed in areas where waterproofing, additional strength and vapour control were required.

Tiles were installed using two Mapei cementitious adhesives: standard-setting Keraflex Maxi S1 and quick-setting Keraquick S1 Zero adhesive, with the addition of Latex Plus elasticizing latex. Tiles were then grouted with anti-efflorescence, quick-setting Ultracolor Plus grout from the Zero line. Both adhesives and grout, along with Ultraplan Renovation Screed 3240, Topcem and Mapeguard UM 35 benefit from very low VOC EMICODE® EC1PLUS formulations, promoting a safe application.

The tile specification included Domus wall and floor tiles and skirting tiles, with designs including Earth Natural Grip, Metro Lounge 2.0 Matt, Wow Stripes, Piemme Glitch, Bera & Beren, Biscuit Matt and Match-Up.
