FINAL SELECTIONS MADE FOR UK WORLDSKILLS TILING TEAM

Published 8th May 2017 / Awards

The path to WorldSkills 2017 continues for the UK tiling team, sponsored by Schlüter-Systems Ltd. Most recently, a series of challenges over an intensive 2-day stretch, from 29th – 30th March, saw the nomination of the representative to compete at the grand final, in Abu Dhabi.

Armondas Tamulis, of Southern Regional College Northern Ireland (SRC), will compete for the UK in the Wall and Floor Tiling category at the climax of this prestigious competition, having beaten off tough competition from fellow student, Kieran Magee. “We have worked incredibly hard in training towards the team selection and reaching the required WorldSkills standards,” says SRC lecturer, Paul Doran, who has been mentoring the team since the beginning of their journey. “Armondas and I would like to thank Schlüter for their ongoing support as our main sponsor, as we prepare for the final in a few months’ time.”

The flagship event of WorldSkills, the WorldSkills Competition occurs every two years and is the biggest vocational education and skills excellence event in the world that truly reflects global industry. One of the main legacies of the competitions is to give visibility and importance to professional education, as one of the true tools of socioeconomic transformation.

“Skill development has benefits for everyone,” says Carl Stokes, head of marketing for Schlüter-Systems Ltd. “The effects are obvious at every level—from individual, to employers, to society as a whole – and we are delighted to show our support for this important cause through our sponsorship of Team UK’s tilers”.

The final of the WorldSkills Competition 2017 takes place in Abu Dhabi in October and a total of 72 member countries and regions will be taking part, competing across 50 skills – ranging from floristry to tiling. For more information, visit www.worldskills.org.
