Congratulations to Sam Durham, wall and floor tiling apprentice studying at Preston College and working for ABD Ceramics, for winning the Montgomery Award for Wall and Floor Tiling 2026 following his victory as the winner of the SkillBuild National Final 2025 in the Wall & Floor Tiling category. Sam Durham’s journey from a quiet apprentice to a confident and skilled competitor is a testament to his hard work, perseverance, and dedication to his craft.
This prestigious recognition is given by the Worshipful Company of Tylers and Bricklayers as part of its annual Craft Awards, alongside the E&R Fuller Award for Bricklaying and the Mason-Elliot Award for roof slating and tiling. The winners each earn a cheque for £750, the Company’s engraved Silver Medal and a framed certificate, which they are invited to receive at the Company’s annual Craft Awards Luncheon at one of the City of London livery Halls.
Sam Durham has exemplified remarkable dedication and growth in his pursuit of excellence in wall and floor tiling. From the outset of his apprenticeship, Sam demonstrated commitment through consistent attendance, punctuality, and engagement, despite initial challenges with self-confidence in his technical abilities.
Under the guidance of his tutor, Steve Smith, sam embraced complex tiling tasks, displaying determination and a focus on quality craftsmanship. His willingness to tackle challenges without complaint highlighted his resilience and ambition.
Encouraged to participate in the regional SkillBuild competition, Sam’s outstanding performance propelled him to the national stage, significantly boosting his confidence. SkillBuild is the largest multi-trade competition in the UK for construction trainees and apprentices, proudly sponsored by The Tile Association and its members Building Adhesives Ltd, N&C Nicobond and Schlüter-Systems. Sam’s achievement in reaching the finals was met with pride and a newfound assertiveness, reportedly declaring, ‘it’s not over yet, I’m going to win it,’ showcasing his growing confidence and competitive spirit.
His accomplishments make him a deserving recipient of the Montgomery Award for Wall and Floor Tiling 2026.
ABD Ceramics and Preston College apprentices Sam Durham and Ryan Holt came in first and fourth at the Worshipful Company’s 2026 Craft Awards, respectively. Anthony Yates, Managing Director at ABD Ceramics, has said that: ‘Our experience with Preston College has been exceptional. The training, structure, and support provided to our apprentices have been superb and we are proud to be a part of it. We are impressed by the attention given to each apprentice and Preston Colleges regular liaison with us as an employer.’
