This year’s prestigious Triennial Awards were held at Vintners’ Hall in the City of London on 5th September 2024. The ceremony was attended by Alderman Professor Michael Mainelli, the Right Honourable, the Lord Mayor of London.
Every three years the Worshipful Company of Tylers and Bricklayers holds its Triennial Awards competition to identify the buildings or structures within the area bounded by the M25 motorway which best demonstrate all-round excellence in the use of bricks, roof slates and tiles and wall and floor tiles.
The winner of 2024 Wall and Floor Tiling Award was the project The Colonnade, College Road, Croydon, London. Architect Adam Nathaniel Furman’s design was carried out by project manager Tide Construction, operations manager John O’Kane and contractor Century Facades Limited using tiles supplied by Craven Dunnill Jackfield.
Croydon Colonnade was inspired by a combination of two main references: the concertina motif used in the surrounding area on buildings from the 1950s and 1960s, associated with the Festival of Britain period, and the brutalist fashion of ubiquitous 3-dimensional diamond motifs. The other influence was Durham Catherdral’s nave, defined by alternating diamond and zigzagging motifs on some of its columns.
The gradient created interest at eye level, while ceramic materials were selected to deliver the crafted feeling of something handmade. Its bold and striking design explains why this project was also recognised as the winner of the esteemed Best Commercial Project – Large (over 250m²) 2024 TTA Award, won by Craven Dunnill Jackfield Ltd.
Also shortlisted for the Wall and Floor Tiling category were projects in the House of Commons and the East India Club, providing tough competition.
Commenting on the Triennial Awards 2024 winners, Head Judge Hilary Satchwell says: “Through meticulous craftsmanship, careful material selection and thoughtful integration into their surroundings, these projects positively influence how people experience and perceive their environment and city.
“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to meet some of the team members behind these exceptional projects and to learn more about the stories behind the winning schemes as well as to experience how they contribute to their urban environment.”
