The 44th WorldSkills Competition will be taking place in Abu Dhabi in October 2017. Schlüter-Systems are the sponsors of the UK Squad.

The WorldSkills Competition is a flagship event: held every two years, it is the biggest vocational education and skills excellence event in the world, reflecting a global industry. A total of 72 member countries and regions will be taking part in the competition, showcasing the very best talent their country has to offer in 50 skills ranging from floristry to tiling.

Paul Doran, WorldSkills UK training expert, reports that the training of the UK team is progressing well and they have just completed their fourth training event. He says that they are on target to develop the squad to the required standard which will enable them to have representation at Worldskills 2017. WorldSkills UK have set a minimum requirement for all trade areas to reach and this is set at a very high mark. Selection of the team will take place in March 2017.

“I have been working closely with Dave Rowley to progress the standards of wall and floor tiling to a regional, national level and on further alignment with WorldSkills,” says Paul. It is agreed that the key to increasing standards is for both Dave and Paul to work together to get candidates from all regions across the UK involved at a competition level, allowing them to work on alignment and securing a place for wall and floor tiling within the worldskills cycle.

Sponsorship of the tiling team is critical, in particular for the future, if it is to develop continue to be able to represent the UK on the WorldSkills stage. Any companies that are interested in sponsorship of the event should contact The TTA.
