A Mapei waterproofing and tiling system has been used to complete a pool installation at Jersey’s Maison Des Landes Hotel. An accessible hotel and community hub, Maison Des Landes is designed specifically for people with disabilities and their carers. The installation was completed by Jersey-based Ian Guiney, ‘The Mosaic Man’, for the charitable trust and features porcelain mosaics throughout the pool tank. All materials were supplied by Romerils of Jersey.
Totally refurbished in 2023, the Maison des Landes combines the relaxing atmosphere of a modern hotel with the latest facilities. The new indoor swimming pool replaces a 25-year old marbelite-finished pool; it has been designed with a ramp and pool access chair for ease of access and exit.
During the tank renovation, Mapeproof Swell hydro-expansive paste and Mapemortar HB R3 Zero concrete repair mortar were used to seal around light fixtures, penetrations and to repair concrete. Products from the Mapefix range of epoxy resin anchor adhesives were used to fix balustrade and ladder bolts. Walls and floors were prepared with Topcem fast-track screed binder and Planitop Fast 330 fibre-reinforced levelling mortar.
Mapelastic Zero cementitious waterproofing membrane was applied to the tank and reinforced with alkali-resistant glass fibre mesh, Mapenet 150, and alkali-resistant rubber tape, Mapeband. The 50x50mm mosaics tiles were then installed with Adesilex P10 white mosaic adhesive, mixed with Isolastic elasticising latex additive.
The installation was completed with Mapei Keracolor SF cementitious grout, with the addition of Isolastic elasticising latex additive. Joints were primed with Mapei Primer FD bonding enhancer and sealed with Mapesil AC pure acetic silicone sealant.
Keracolor SF, Mapesil AC and Topcem are EMICODE® EC1PLUS-certified and have very low VOC formulations for a safe installation environment. Mapelastic Zero and Mapemortar HB R3 Zero also have CO2 fully offset in the entire life cycle.
“Good people find good people and Ian Guiney’s talent is extraordinary – he’s like a modern-day Picasso!” commented Steve Martin, General Manager of Maison Des Landes Hotel. “The pool is breath taking; he achieved exactly the two-tone effect and wow-factor we were hoping for, using his preferred Mapei system. Our pool is now enjoyed not only by our disabled holidaymakers and countless guests with mobility and accessibility needs, but also by many in the local community – from our youngest pool user, at just six weeks old, right through to people in their 90s.”
